Jessica Peters: Object 1

Artist statement

The first thing I do when I start a new piece I start with a blank sheet of paper or smooth out the sable, I look at the space, and visuals of what I want. That is how I started a piece and at the start when I created these pieces I thought that I had an idea of what I wanted but everything started to fall apart figuratively and literally.  When I waiting for the piece to dry it fell apart, when it got fried in the kiln it fell apart, when I picked it fell apart so at that point I was so done with clay at that point I took a break and switched to draw for a while and try to make drawings that connect to the clay pieces. After I did that I got back to it but I started something different which I think connects to the things I have created because this time it was intentional to make it look broken, infected, and beat up with the feature of a face or parts. As you absorb my art, I don¡¯t like trying one thing but doing multiple.

What do you see when you look at this artwork? What do you feel? I like to play with this a lot when it comes to art. Trying to let the viewer see what they want, make it have more than one meaning. That is why I try to use only a little color. As well as switching between the mediums and playing with texture. As you look being perfect is not something I strive towards, a piece of artwork for the artist sometimes is never finished we tend always to find something wrong or something we can add to make it better. Finding that meaning in that moment might have the biggest impact.
