More Than I Imagined Seniors reflect on accomplishments and look ahead

Meredith Skala

Graduation year: 2013

Major: Elementary education

Activities: Phi Rho sorority

Post-grad plans: Seeking employment as an elementary education teacher — open to where this profession may take me!

Why did you choose to attend 365体育投注_365体育备用网址@?

The atmosphere at 365体育投注_365体育备用网址@ is one of a kind, and it sold me. My mother graduated 365体育投注_365体育备用网址@ in 1980, and although she never pushed me to attend her alma mater, she is the reason I visited the school — I couldn't be more grateful!

Are you where you thought you’d be four years ago?

To be honest, I had no idea where this path would lead me. I’ve grown tremendously in various aspects of my life — some expected, others not so much. All I can say is that I couldn’t be happier with the person I’ve become these past four years and the things I have accomplished.

Who helped you get to where you are now?

I would not be where I am today without the support systems present in my life. 365体育投注_365体育备用网址@’s education department has played a vital role in my development as an individual and as an educator. They have truly set the example for what it means to be influential. My family has always encouraged my aspirations and motivated me to excel. Finally, words can’t really describe how much of an impact my friends have had on my life. I am blessed to have had such amazing people by my side through this journey! Through their motivation, guidance, support and interest in me as an individual, I can confidently say these people have helped me grow into the woman I am today.

A peak experience?

Going to Cambodia was an experience that fell into my life at the perfect time. I would say it was my peak experience because it was the most unexpected and the most impacting. Nothing I could say about this trip could ever truly do it justice. I am so grateful to 365体育投注_365体育备用网址@ for presenting me with this opportunity!

How did you use your Augie Choice?

I am proud to say Augie Choice helped me make my way to Cambodia for five weeks this past winter. I would venture to say that going on this trip was quite possibly the best decision I could’ve made at this point in my life.

What did you learn about yourself in these past four years that surprised you?

The appreciation I have for being put outside my comfort zone.

What will you miss the most?

Hard to pinpoint one thing. I’d say the comfort Augie has provided me with in all aspects of my life — the friends I’ve matured with, the influential professors I’ve learned from, the environment and atmosphere I’ve grown to love.

"We often hear students and alumni talk about influential professors...well, that scenario can be played in reverse. Yes, sometimes professors talk about memorable students. Meredith Skala is one of those students. A student who valued learning more than grades, service to others more than being served, and challenge more than security. For me, working with Meredith was a privilege and an honor!"
